The Creative Media Industries Institute (CMII) and PantherDev at Georgia State University (GSU) are thrilled to announce the winners of the Global Game Jam 2024 GSU Jam Site, held from Friday, January 26 to Sunday, January 28 at CMII in downtown Atlanta. The event brought together a diverse group of nearly 100 students passionate about game development, putting their creativity and ingenuity on full display throughout the 48-hour competition.
Taking the Best Overall prize was “Laugh Attack,” a two-person fighter designed by a10-member team of predominantly GSU students. The game, which pits two court jesters in a match to earn the respect of their king, was an ambitious undertaking despite the two-day turnaround.
The winning team receives mentoring from leading industry professionals to continue their game’s development and the opportunity to have their game compete at the state level Best of Georgia competition this spring. The Best of Georgia winning team will receive thousands of dollars’ worth of professional service to help bring its game to market.
“We’re super excited to improve our game while learning new skills from both our mentor and each other,” said Kacy Woodring, game development student at CMII and team lead for “Laugh Attack.”
Qualifying teams at the Global Game Jam 2024 GSU Jam Site were judged by CMII Professors Max Thomas, Ying Zhu, James Martin, and Jeasy Sehgal, along with game developer Dedren Snead and XR DOJO CEO Drew Pearson. Organizing the event was PantherDev president, Laura Baptie.
“Global Game Jam provides a space for students to play with the different aspects of game development such as programming, game art, and sound design within a tight time span that rewards participants with valuable experience,” stated Baptie. “Congratulations to everyone who jammed, the games created were truly special. I hope our winners are proud of how much they accomplished under such a high-stress environment. “
