ABOUT US
In the last five years, the percentage of CMII faculty who are minorities has jumped from 20% to 40%.
Making a Difference

The Creative Media Industries Institute (CMII) has three core missions:
- To organize advanced technology media and arts training so Georgia State students are prepared to start careers in the entertainment and information industries
- To build a model to nurture media entrepreneurs
- To focus on industry collaboration—especially concentrated on the film and TV production, music industries and game design sectors—to generate research and economic development
These three missions connect to the new CMII media content creation center and each is the focus of one of its three floors. CMII faculty members have deep and broad experience in the creative industries and they share their knowledge and industry connections with students. Formal partnerships to accomplish CMII goals are set in motion with regional media companies and educational partners, including the Georgia Film Academy.
A Transformative Gift
Thanks to a $22.8 million gift made by the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation in 2014, a former annex to the SunTrust Bank building facing the south end of Woodruff Park was transformed into the Creative Media Industries Institute (CMII) complex.
The building was totally changed inside so that advanced technology digital and audio production, virtual and augmented reality labs and media maker and entrepreneurship facilities could better support Georgia State students interested in the arts and media.
In announcing the gift, Russ Hardin, president of the Woodruff Foundation, said the gift would have a multi-layered impact on the city and the state.
“It’s an investment in a robust, growing program at Georgia State,” Hardin said. “It’s also an investment in an industry that Georgia has made a priority. And it’s an investment in downtown Atlanta.
The CMII facility also received support from the Georgia Research Alliance, which made a commitment to provide equipment, establishing the Creative Media Industries Institute as a unique place for students to get hands-on experience with cutting-edge hardware and software tools.
CMII opened its doors in 2017 with an inaugural class of 12 media entrepreneurship students and four game design and development students. Today, CMII educates 1,000 students a year, preparing them for careers in the fast-growing creative industries in Georgia and beyond.
As a hub for the intersection of creativity and technology, CMII enjoys close proximity to the university’s programs in music, art and design, film, theatre, creative writing, journalism, game design, computer science and related programs in intellectual property (at the College of Law) and entrepreneurship (coordinated by the Robinson College of Business).
